The European Space Agency has selected Marco Zipper to join its team and become a professional astronaut. With this, Zipper becomes the second Swiss astronaut in history. The 33-year-old was selected from among 22,500 candidates who applied for the position in the agency’s latest roadshow.

Zipper, who is currently working as a urologist in the bilingual city of Biel/Bienne (canton Bern), is also a paratrooper in the Swiss Army and holds a private pilot’s licence. Zipper also previously served as Chief Medical Officer for the Swiss Forces operating within the International Multinational Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo.
