“Metro Man” who stole the spotlight from the World Cup stars

Despite the absence of the Kenyan national team from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a young Kenyan succeeded in attracting the attention of fans who came from all over the world to attend the World Cup matches.

Abu Bakr Abbas, or “the metro man”, has become a familiar face among fans and on social media platforms, due to his distinctive way of doing his job.

Abbas’s job is to wear a large hand and point in the direction of the metro station to guide the fans, while repeating the phrase “The metro is from here.”

Although the job of the “subway man” seems a bit boring, his funny way and dedication to performing his simple work made him a World Cup star, without touching the ball.

The story of the metro man

The site where Abu Bakr Abbas sits has become a popular destination for fans at the World Cup, as they seek to take pictures and short videos with the Kenyan youth.

The streets of Qatar are currently filled with hundreds of people working in the same job as Abbas, but he succeeded in obtaining greater fame due to his distinctive methods, such as repeating the phrase “the metro is from here” with a special melody, or dancing with a traffic light stick to attract the attention of passers-by.

Ironically, Abbas’s fame came out of his suffering from boredom, as he says about his work outside the Souq Waqif metro station: “The fans were passing by without any interaction, so I came up with an idea through which I could share their enthusiasm with the fans, and be a listener at the same time.”

“I am obsessed with this work because it is fun work and I love it,” he told the Associated Press.

A popular face

The organizing committee of the tournament honored Abu Bakr Abbas in light of his dedication to his work. He was also celebrated in front of nearly 60,000 spectators at Al-Bayt Stadium in one of the group stage matches.

The official FIFA account on Twitter spoke about Abbas after he became famous, and he said in his tweet, which he published last Friday: “The clips of the metro man have become very popular thanks to his attractive style of directing fans to the metro station.”

The fame of “Metro Man” resulted in the emergence of many accounts bearing his name on the “Tik Tok” platform, to publish his videos.

Among the most famous fans who appeared with Abbas, the famous Turkish chef Burak Ozdemir, who cooked a meal in front of the seat of the “metro man” to serve him.
