Microsoft Edge will soon have a new handy feature called Drop. It will allow users to transfer their files to other devices where the Internet browser is installed.
Over the years, Microsoft Edge has gained many additional features and it is clear that the work of the American giant has paid off ever since Edge has become the third most used browser in the world. As of early May 2022, Edge offers a free VPN built in. Unfortunately, it is still less efficient than the classic VPN, and the fault is that it is impossible to hide its geographical location.
However, the next new feature to appear in Microsoft’s browser is related to file sharing. Currently, there are only 36 solutions to transfer files from one device to another. In general, users send their files via email or choose Google Drive, which has recently made it possible to use keyboard shortcuts for copying, cutting, and pasting.
Microsoft intends to offer another alternative to its users. As revealed by Neowin, the US manufacturer is working on a native functionality that allows file sharing between your devices where the browser is installed.
Microsoft Edge is testing Drop, to share files between its devices
This feature, called Drop, will take the form of a side panel where it will be possible to drag and drop your notes and files to switch them to your Android smartphone for example. Of course, your Edge account will need to be signed in on both devices for the process to work.
Note that the Drop functionality appears to be based on OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage solution. In fact, in the column we see how much space is occupied and how much free space is left. In addition, Drop displays a QR code for downloading the mobile version of the browser, in case you are not using Microsoft Edge on your smartphone yet. Unfortunately, it is impossible for the average user to try Drop at the moment.
This is because the feature is only available to users of Edge Canary 104, the latest version of the browser for developers only. However, as Neowin’s shared screenshots show, if you’re in this specific situation, you can activate Drop from the Appearance tab in your browser settings.
