On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Moscow had imposed personal sanctions against several British citizens, as part of a “mutual response” to London’s move, according to the Russian “RT Arabia” channel’s news site.
In a statement posted on the ministry’s website, Nikolai Lagonin, deputy director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Information and Information Department, announced that the UK government would impose personal sanctions against Russian citizens in December 2020 and April 2021. In the framework of the document “Comprehensive Anti-Corruption Prohibitions” approved by the British Parliament under allegations of human rights violations in the Chechen Republic, as well as “artificial and absurd excuses”.
The Russian diplomat continued that London, with its steps, had shown its genuine, unproductive intentions regarding Britain’s relations with Russia, and that after Britain’s exit from the EU, it had “expanded its set of tools to” highlight Russia’s leading role in tarnishing the UK’s reputation. “
Lagoon said London’s simplicity in sentencing and the imposition of “sanctions” on “criminals” could only be seen as an attempt to interfere in another country’s affairs and put pressure on the Russian judiciary.
“We renew our call for the British leadership to abandon its unjust hostile attitude toward our country,” Lachhonan said at the end of his statement, warning that “there can be no friendly action without an appropriate and proportionate response.”
Britain and the European Union imposed sanctions on Russia in 2018 after former Russian spy Skribal and his daughter drank poison in London.
