It may sound like a scene out of the sci-fi series Star Trek, but a NASA doctor and his team become the first humans to be transported from Earth to space using a hologram, as Dr. Enjoy a two-way conversation and even share a handshake with French astronaut Thomas Pesquet.
According to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”, Dr. Schmid said that holograms are a type of technology that allows high-quality 3D models of people to be reconstructed, compressed and transmitted directly anywhere in real time.
When combined with mixed reality displays such as Microsoft’s HoloLens, it allows users to see, hear and interact with remote participants in 3D as if they were actually in the same physical space.
Holograms have also been used by Microsoft since 2016, but this is the first time the technology has been deployed in an environment as remote as space.
“This is a completely new way of human communication over vast distances,” Dr. Schmid said. “It is a completely new way of human exploration, where our human being can travel away from the planet without our physical body but our being definitely exists.”
Also, using a Microsoft Hololens Kinect camera and a computer equipped with custom Alexa software, European astronaut Pesquet had a two-way conversation with live images of Dr. Schmid placed in the center of the International Space Station. NASA said it was reviewing this new form of communication as a prelude to more comprehensive use in future missions.
