The US space agency is looking for “extremely enthusiastic individuals” to participate in a simulation of the Martian atmosphere, to live for a year in a 1,700-square-foot habitat 3D-printed by ICON, called “Mars Dune Alpha”.
According to NASA, the program consists of three simulations, the first starting in 2022, and four crew members will spend 365 days completely isolated in phantom habitats on the Red Planet.
“These habitats will simulate important challenges on Mars, including resource constraints, equipment failures, communications delays, and other environmental stresses,” NASA said in the announcement.
The crew’s tasks may include simulating spacewalks, scientific research, using virtual reality and robotic controls, and exchanging communications, and the results will provide important scientific data to validate systems and develop solutions.
The US agency confirmed that applications for registration are open from today and continue until September 12, 2021, provided that those interested in participating are between 30 and 55 years old, have a master’s degree in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and have at least two years of relevant professional experience. relevance.
Participating individuals must also pass an astronaut simulation of a long-term NASA flight and be required to receive a “Covid-19” vaccine.
The habitats will be created at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and will include workstations, medical facilities and a place to grow food.
The missions aim to provide valuable insights and information for evaluating NASA’s space food system, as well as the physical and behavioral health and performance outcomes of future space missions.

“Each mission will include four crew members who will have their own sleeping quarters located at one end of the habitat, and on the other side there is a place designated for work stations, medical stations and food cultivation stations,” she added.
A communal living space will also be created at the centre, and the habitat will include a mix of fixed and mobile furniture, customizable lighting, temperature and sound control.
