Cairo: «The Gulf»

Many of us today live this life without a sense of belonging to it, and without a feeling of happiness and comfort living in it, where a person feels a gap separating himself and the world around him; Rather, there is a gap within himself, which makes him feel alienated, for there is nothing in the world that can fully satisfy him, and he does not know why.

Man desires to fill this gap, to find what he has lost of a feeling of happiness, contentment and peace, but how can he not realize the reason for that feeling? It is a prevalent problem that has been dealt with by thinkers in different ways.

This book by Aya Samir, entitled “Philosophical Attitudes in Self-Purification”, indicates that the mission of philosophy since its inception has been to search for the best ways of life and obtain happiness, as Pierre Haddou describes it, in his book “Philosophy is a way of life”, and says that it is an art of living that despairs of wounds. , by teaching us a new way of life, it is to explore the best ways to live, to obtain happiness in this life, and then to search for a better world.

The aim of this book is to shed light on the causes of human suffering, from a philosophical point of view throughout the ages, and to reveal ways and directions for treating it, in the hope that this presentation will help us in revealing the causes of the suffering of contemporary man, through the concept of self-purification, in order to return to the self. In order to feel inner peace and happiness, it is an attempt to know ourselves and the world, especially if self-purification is a complete transformation and change of one’s vision, behavior and way of life.

The book indicates the dimensions of the concept of self-purification, and that there are two dimensions: an individual dimension and a collective dimension. The first is subjective and refers to the individual as a soul and body, and it is possible to refer to it as a species; That is, the human being in general and the group or society, and the second dimension of purification is a collective dimension, which is purification of society from corrupt social values.

The concept of self-purification reveals the image of human suffering from the point of view of philosophers and their various means, including spiritual, mental, social, and political, and whether their means are elitist and commensurate with contemporary man today or not, and how similar their theories are with the statement of the relationship of self-purification to the capitalist system.

The book deals with the philosophical trends in self-purification in ancient philosophies, by addressing the Indian and Greek philosophers of self-purification, and their various means through representative models. From the philosophy that has long been famous for its interest in the spiritual aspect, the book deals with Buddha, and divides Greek philosophy into three stages, the pre-Socratic stage; That is, before Greek philosophy, and in the second stage Greek philosophy reached its peak of maturity through Plato, and in the third stage the post-Aristotle stage, where it deteriorated and withered, and the so-called Neoplatonism appeared.

The book deals with medieval philosophers who were distinguished by a religious character. In the last chapter, it discusses modern and contemporary philosophers such as Spinoza, Nietzsche, and Alain Badiou. The last confirms that our happiness in this age has become a happiness linked to consumption and commodities, and it must come at any cost; Any happiness of satisfaction, and it represents the suffering of contemporary man according to Alain Badiou, and then self-purification according to Badiou is purification from the prevailing misconception about happiness, and from the manifestations of this age that robbed our true happiness, and led to the transformation of our happiness into happiness of satisfaction, and from the state of surrender to what Things led to him today; That is, restoring human awareness of himself, of the truth and of the world. He worked to liberate human consciousness from the constraints of society, the prevailing values, and the happiness of gratification.

Badiou believes that it is time for us to end the philosophy of the ends that has been in place for two centuries, proclaiming the end of history, the end of philosophy and the end of truth, and revive it anew. The criticism is directed at the prevailing philosophies today that failed to reveal the truth, according to his expression, and to adhere to its demand as the basis of every desire to change the world, and to reject the system of this miserable world, and to restore the concept of true happiness to the world.
