Gerard Pique has promised to give up his business and private life to focus solely on football after Barcelona coach Xavi said he would be redundant for the Spanish club next season.
The Spain international was told that he had no future at the club two weeks ago due to his unprofessional behavior off the field and his deteriorating physical condition, while Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed that the club needed to include a high-level defender.
Pique responded, stressing that he would work to be the first choice for Xavi, despite the coach’s clear words, and his telling the international defender, that he is among the high-income earners in Barcelona, and that he is no longer part of his plans, and he can leave the Nou Camp this summer.
Xavi’s main problems with the player revolve around his commercial and personal interests off the field, and his inability to handle the hectic schedule of modern football.
The player also attacked Laporta for hinting at the arrival of a high-ranking defender and that Pique would only be a substitute, at a time when the club had hoped Pique would come out with dignity this summer, but it appears that they will be looking to stay in place for as long as possible.
The veteran defender is keen to show that even at the age of 35, he is still the best option for Xavi next season, and he comes to Barcelona’s training ground at nine in the morning every day to undergo rehabilitation, and is working hard to recover from a thigh injury.
He is also looking to get his fitness back to be able to compete against any oncoming defenders, and Frenchman Jules Conde, 23, was billed as a key defensive target for Barcelona in the summer window, being one of Europe’s most sought-after young players, and several European giants chasing the player.
But he only lasted 45 minutes in France’s 1-0 defeat against Croatia in the Nations League match earlier this month, before he was discharged due to injury, and France coach Didier Deschamps revealed that the young player needs surgery to treat an old injury, which he has to Barcelona to consider alternative options before the 2022-2023 season.
It is noteworthy that Pique, founder and president of a sports and media investment company called “Cosmos Holding”, along with four other partners, including Hiroshi Mikitani, founder of the current sponsor Barcelona, and the Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten.
The player has vowed to stay away from his off-court business, as well as from social media, to focus on football, shortly after the high-profile split of Pique from Colombian singer Shakira.
