Princess Sumaya University wins first place in the world in the Women in Data Science competition

Three teams of undergraduate students from King Hussein’s College of Computing Sciences at Princess Sumaya University for Technology won the first three places in the world at the level of universities participating in the Women in Data Science competition organized by Stanford University, with the participation of 1,800 contestants from universities and companies representing 90 countries, and they came in the centers 17, 19, 20 overall ranking level.

The competition, which is available to both sexes, and conducted via video communication technology, addressed two main challenges for this year, focusing on the best ways to mitigate the effects of climate change, and energy efficiency.

The winning teams were represented by the students, according to a press release today, Tuesday by the university, Yazid Badarwa, Rima Abu Hamdan, Dana Twal, Adnan Saeed, Walid Amr, Joud Masoud, Sarah Abbas, Fayez Abu Al-Enein, Rakan Armoush, Rania Al-Ali, Amr Raed, and Heba Al-Najdawi, under the supervision of Dr. Bushra Al-Hajjawi, Dr. Osama Abdel-Hay, and Dr. Muhammad Al-Azza.

University President Dr. Mashhour Al-Refai stressed that this achievement consolidates and enhances the university’s presence in international competitions, enriches the competitive spirit of students, and supports and diversifies the ways for them to obtain new experiences and skills. Al-Rifai added that the victory is in line with the vision of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, in the relentless pursuit of putting Jordan on the map of technologically advanced countries.

For his part, the Dean of the College, Ashraf Ahmed, indicated that participation in this major international competition helps students deal with real problems facing important sectors in the world, and motivates them to search for innovative solutions that serve science and its path. It is noteworthy that the university had previously won first place in the world in the IEEE programming competition, and first place in the “Huawei” competition for innovation in the Middle East, and won the Crown Prince Award for the best government application for two consecutive years, and the title of champion of the Middle East and Africa in the 2018 ACM global programming competition. And the first and fourth places in the “Ethical Hacking” competition 2021.
