The rainbow flag, which symbolizes the LGBT community, was hoisted on the US Embassy in Moscow on Friday.

The diplomats noted that June is a month of pride designed to ensure that everyone deserves a life free from hatred, prejudice and oppression.

On Monday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that the US State Department would raise the gay flag this week.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law in 2013 banning gay propaganda among children. Ordinary Russians face fines of up to 5,000 rubles (equivalent to $70), officials up to 50,000 rubles (equivalent to $700) and even more severe punishment of up to millions for organizations and companies, for such propaganda “using the media or the Internet.”

At the same time, the Russian President has declared, on more than one occasion, that no one violates the rights of the gay community in Russia.
