Sally Azar is the first priest in the Holy Land in the Lutheran Church

In many parts of Christendom, it is no longer uncommon to see women leaders in churches. But so far, the Holy Land – where the events described in the Bible took place – has not witnessed the ordination of a woman from the region.

But on Sunday, Sally Azar, a Palestinian from Jerusalem, became the first woman to be ordained a priest in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land. Hundreds of international well-wishers attended the ordination ceremony in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Reverend Sally told the BBC: “I was even happier to see the great enthusiasm on the part of the audience. It is an indescribable feeling to have taken this step with the support of the Church.”

She added, “I hope that many girls and women will know that this is possible and that other women will join us in other churches. I know it will take a long time, but I think it could be exciting if this changes in Palestine.”
