In a scene that will not be repeated for thousands of years, the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, monitors the passage of comet C / 2021 A1 (Leonard) at its closest distance to Earth, Sunday, at about 04:54 pm Mecca time.

The comet will be at a very safe distance from Earth of about 34 million km.

Millions of people in Arab countries can watch this event before the comet sets off towards Venus, and passes only about 4 million kilometers from the planet in a scene that will not be repeated, perhaps for thousands of years, according to National Geographic magazine.

And the Saudi News Agency (SPA) quoted the President of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Majid Abu Zahra, as saying that the comet Leonard “will increase in brightness starting from December 14, and it will become visible in the evening sky immediately after sunset.”

He explained that “the celestial visitor is moving at a very high speed, amounting to 254,412 kilometers per hour relative to the Earth.”

Despite the comet’s speed through the vast space of the Earth’s solar system, it is not expected to see it quickly across the sky.

According to National Geographic, this comet was first discovered in January 2021, and it likely spent 35,000 years traveling toward the sun. The scientist Gregory Leonard was the first to observe it.
