Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN)–Museum security officers, people who may spend most of their time looking at art, are planning an exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA).
Curator and art historian Laurie Stokes Sims, who helped develop the project, said the exhibition “Art Guard,” due to open in March 2022, will feature a selection of works that resonate with each of the 17 participating officers.
She added, “I was amazed and moved by the persuasive and personal statements made by each officer about his selection, which were very different from the intellectual and candidate approach that a trained curator would follow.”
For example, Officer Ricardo Castro chose a series of pre-Columbian sculptures “as a way to introduce some of my Puerto Rican American culture into the exhibition.”
Derek Mangos chose a painting by a local painter, Thomas Rackle, called “House of Frederick Crey”, which depicts in part the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon, Baltimore.
Officer Keelen Johnson, who had a classical background in singing and performing, chose German painter Max Beckmann’s 1939 work “Still Life with Large Shell”.
“It’s a portrait of his second wife Matilda, who was a violinist and gave up her career to support Beckman and his painting aspirations,” Johnson said. “His first wife was also an opera singer, and I felt that this painting reflects my path as an opera singer.”
Other officers participating in the exhibition include: Tracy Archable-Frederick, Jess Betheer, Ben Bjork, Melissa Klasing, Brett Click, Alex Deakin, Michael Jones, Rob Kimpton, Chris Koe, Alex Lee, Dominic Mallary, Sarah Rourke, Joan Smith and Elise Tinsley.
Today, officers work with museum staff to create a catalog and develop public programs for the exhibition.
“I am impressed with the hard work, dedication and investment they have in this project,” said Stokes Sims. “It will be interesting for the public to see the many valuable voices in great organizations.”
