An Indian court has acquitted Shilpa Shetty of 15 years after actor Richard Kerr kissed a Bollywood star on stage.
Footage released in 2007 showed Hollywood star kissing Shetty on the cheek at an AIDS awareness event in Delhi.
The court has just ruled that the charges are “unsubstantiated” and that he was the victim of an unnecessary attempt.
At the time, the kiss provoked opposition from extremist Hindu groups who considered it an insult to Indian values.
Some people in India consider kissing in public to be prohibited.
Khair Shetty hugged and kissed on the public stage at a charity event in Delhi almost 15 years ago, for which he apologized.
“Kissing is an attempt to show that it is a safe act that does not lead to the spread of HIV,” the actor said.
Soon after, the Supreme Court of India quashed the arrest warrant issued to the American actor in connection with the incident. He dismissed the allegations against the actor, calling them “cheap advertising”.
But last week, the charges against Shetty for a similar incident in Mumbai were dropped after he disappeared from the Indian court system.
The Bollywood star’s legal team has argued that it would be unfair to find Shetty “guilty” because he did not oppose the kiss enough at the time.
Shilpa Shetty, after appearing on the UK reality TV show ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ in 2007, attracted attention outside India, where she was subjected to racial harassment and insults. She continued it until she won the match.
