Škoda is already producing MEB batteries, awaiting a decision on the future

At the end of summer or the beginning of autumn, the top representatives of the Volkswagen Group will make many key decisions that will directly affect the future of the Škoda automaker.

This was stated by Michael Oeljklaus, Member of the Board of Directors of Skoda Auto, at the ceremony to start production of high-voltage batteries for electric vehicles using the MEB platform.

“It is a question of which of the planned new electric cars bearing our logo will be produced at the Czech plants of Škoda Auto,” he said.

A total of three are planned for 2030 and all will be smaller and cheaper than the current Enyaq iV.

Škoda would like to fill the liberated production capacity with new types of electric cars after the cars with internal combustion engines are finished, which will not have a direct successor. For example, the capacity will soon be launched at Kvasiny after the start of assembly of the new generation Superbu Combi at the Volkswagen Bratislava plant. However, it is also possible that one of the cars will be manufactured at other factories of interest, and, conversely, electric cars with logos of Volkswagen, Sat or Bridge will be created in our country.

Oeljeklaus also emphasized that the focus on electric cars is irreversible in the case of Škoda Auto. According to him, the way to reduce emissions is not to expand the current offer of models with a combined hybrid engine. On the contrary, as he stated in response to a question from the editor of the Autonaelektř portal, these cars were only a temporary solution and will gradually disappear from the Škoda offer.

Another very important decision for the group, which will also be made at the end of the summer, is the location of a plant for the production of battery cells. “We are striving to achieve this and the Czech Republic is logically a very suitable location for this,” he said.

To date, battery cells assembled in modules are imported to Mladá Boleslav from LG and CATL manufacturers from Poland and Germany.

In Boleslav, with production capacity currently installed, they can produce 255,000 batteries per year with capacities of 55, 62 or 82 kWh. Next year, the capacity will be expanded by another 125,000 batteries. Part of it is consumed in a nearby production hall during the production of the Enyaq iV, and the rest goes to the German factories of Volkswagen.
