A new study published by Sports Science for Health has revealed the health risks of sitting for long periods of time.

The study found that the negative effects of prolonged sitting on mental health outweighed the benefits of regular exercise, according to researchers who studied the impact of “Govit-19” on people.

When the first national lockout began in March 2020, allowing one hour of outdoor exercise per day was a key part of the UK government’s strategy.

But a study by the University of Huddersfield found that many people work from home or eventually sit for more than eight hours a day on vacation.

This, in turn, had a detrimental effect on their mental health, the researchers said.

Even people who engage in moderate or intense physical activity for 150 minutes a week have experienced a negative impact on their mental health and claim that more exercise is needed to balance the increasing sedentary lifestyle.

Dr. Leon Azevedo, one of the authors of the study, said: ‘Although 300 people like us were very active, more than 50% of them sat for more than eight hours a day. Other studies suggest that if you sit for more than eight hours, you may need to exercise longer to compensate for the negative impact of sitting behavior on physical health effects.

He added: “Reducing sitting time has a positive effect on mental health. In addition to increasing physical activity, public health should be encouraged to reduce sitting time for mental health benefits.”
