Israel is working to release an Israeli couple detained in Turkey on charges of spying for filming the palace of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul, charges denied by the Israeli government, and heralds a political rift between the two countries.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett issued a statement about the Turkish authorities’ allegations of arresting two Israeli spies, and confirmed that he had contacted the detained spouses, Natalie and Mordi Oknin, and also contacted their families and informed them of the efforts being made to return them to Israel.

Bennett said after Sunday’s cabinet meeting that he had confirmed with Israeli officials that the couple “do not work for any Israeli (intelligence) agency.” The couple works as a bus driver in central Israel.

He stressed that the upper echelons of Israel dealt with this issue over the weekend, under the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will continue to work tirelessly with the aim of finding a solution as quickly as possible.
