Jamie Spears, the father of American singer Britney Spears, agreed on Thursday to release his daughter’s guardianship, giving her the right to dispose of her property.
Pop star Britney Spears’ lawyer announced that her father, Jimmy Spears, had agreed to relinquish custody of his daughter’s affairs after taking the role for a long time.
“We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his attorney have now acknowledged in court that he should be removed from that role,” attorney Matthew Rosengat said.
Spears, who has controlled his daughter’s affairs since she suffered from a mental illness in 2008, agreed to step down from custody in a document filed today in court.
The pop star has been seeking for months to get rid of her father’s guardianship over her, and a court had scheduled a hearing for her application in late September in Los Angeles.
Last July, a judge rejected Britney Spears’ request to lift her father’s legal guardianship.
Spears has asked the Los Angeles court to lift her father’s legal guardianship over her, who has ruled her life for 13 years.
In a long and emotional speech, she said: “I want to end this guardianship without evaluation. This guardianship harms me more than it helps me. I deserve to have my life.”
It is worth noting that judicial guardianship is a type of court-imposed guardianship that includes people who are no longer able to make decisions for themselves, usually the elderly and infirm, but critics have argued that the process can be exploited and cited the case of Spears as an example.
