The first NASA capsule to fly into space on display at a museum in New York

The first US spacecraft to be launched into space, Mercury-Redstone 1A (MR-1A), has arrived at a museum on Long Island, New York, with curator Josh Stove said: “Although it flew without a person on board, it is historic from Where it was the first.

According to the American “space” website, “they were testing the entire parachute system and the old missiles…and all of that worked, leading the way to the beginning of the space race.”

The MR-1A capsule was manufactured by McDonell Aircraft, today part of Boeing, and shipped to Cape Canaveral, Florida on July 23, 1960, for what was planned as the first launch of a Mercury spacecraft over a Redstone rocket.

Also, four months later on November 21 the countdown reached zero at 9:00 a.m. EDT, but instead of going into space, the booster motor shut off and the craft rested again on the launch pad, having traveled only about 4 inches from In its place, the capsule disposed of its escape missile in response, and deployed its main and reserve parachutes.

A month later, NASA was ready to try again, and using the same but refurbished spacecraft and a new rocket, Mercury-Redstone-1A blasted off on December 19, 1960, from Launch Complex 5 (LC-5), this time to a much better result.

The MR-1A capsule reached an altitude of 130 miles (210 kilometers) and completed a suborbital spaceflight, qualifying the spacecraft for use on primate and subsequent human missions. After flying for 15 minutes and 45 seconds, the MR-1A spacecraft plunged into the Atlantic Ocean. It was recovered by helicopter.
