North Korean leader Kim Jong Un led preparations for a protracted confrontation with the United States at a Politburo meeting in Pyongyang.
North Korean media have reported that Zhang Un ordered the reconsideration of “confidence-building” measures with the United States because of Washington’s hostile policy toward Pyongyang.
The United States has previously called on North Korea to “stop its illegal and destabilizing operations” a month after Pyongyang fired two suspicious ballistic missiles at its fourth test.
In a phone call with Japanese and South Korean colleagues, US Ambassador to North Korea Chung Kim called on North Korea to respond favorably to Washington’s offer of dialogue “without preconditions.” .
He added: “The US ambassador reiterated the United States’ firm commitment to protecting its allies.”
North Korea conducted its train-based missile division exercises on Friday, in which two tactical guided missiles hit a specific target in the East Sea.
The UN has recently launched several ballistic missiles at North Korea. Diplomatic sources say the United States has called for a new meeting of the Security Council.
An unnamed diplomatic source told the AFP that the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Albania and Mexico were backing the closed-door meeting on Thursday at the invitation of the United States.
In an interview with the Washington Post, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield said that Washington would “continue to increase pressure on the North Koreans.”
