The sun is about 150 million kilometers from the earth, though, and we can feel its warmth and heat, but what is puzzling is that the extreme coldness of outer space, even if the earth is burning with the sun’s heat millions of kilometers away, what is the reason? Know with us in this article.
To understand this phenomenon, it is important to distinguish between two terms that are often used interchangeably, heat and temprature.
Heat is the energy stored inside an object, while the temperature or coldness of that body is measured according to the temperature.
Therefore, when heat is transferred to a body, its temperature rises and there is a decrease in the temperature value when heat is extracted from the body.
This heat transfer can occur through three modes: conduction, convection and radiation.
Heat transfer occurs through conduction in solids and when solid particles are heated, they begin to vibrate and collide with each other, transferring heat in this process from the hotter particles to the cooler ones.
Heat transfer through convection is a phenomenon within liquids and gases. This mode of heat transfer also occurs at the surface between solids and liquids.
When a liquid is heated, the particles rise up and carry thermal energy with them. A room heater is the best example of convective heat transfer.
When the heater heats the surrounding air, the air temperature increases and the air rises to the top of the room. The cold air at the top is forced to move down and heat up, creating a convection current.
Heat transfer through radiation is a process in which the body releases heat in the form of light. All materials emit some amount of thermal energy based on their temperature.
At room temperature, all objects, including humans, radiate heat in the form of infrared waves due to radiation, thermal imaging cameras can detect objects even at night.
The hotter the body, the more radiation it receives, and the sun is an excellent example of thermal radiation that transfers heat through the solar system.
The coldness of space is caused by its infinite emptiness.

When an object is placed outside the Earth’s atmosphere and in direct sunlight, it will heat up to about 120 degrees Celsius.
Objects around the Earth and in outer space that do not receive direct sunlight are about 10 degrees Celsius.
The temperature of 10 degrees Celsius is due to heating of some of the particles that come out of the Earth’s atmosphere. However, if we measure the temperature of the empty space between the celestial bodies in space, it is only 3 K above absolute zero.
So, the main conclusion here is that the temperature of the sun can only be felt if there is material to absorb it, and space is an endless void, hence the coldness.
