The Egyptian team’s delegation to the Olympics has not decided the identity of the athlete who will carry the country’s flag at the opening of the “Tokyo 2020” Olympic Games.
The Tokyo Olympics will start with an opening ceremony on July 23, and all competitions will end on August 8.
There is no specific mechanism in the Egyptian Olympic Committee to select the athlete who bears the flag in the Olympics, but this is done in consultation between the participants and the head of the mission, according to what was stated to Egyptian media, Sherif El-Erian, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Olympic Committee.
The International Olympic Committee requires the participating missions to send the name of the athlete who will raise the flag of the country at the opening ceremony a few days before, provided that his CV is available to the sponsors of the ceremony.
What happened in the Rio de Janeiro tournament?
In the last Games held in Rio de Janeiro 2016, Ahmed Al-Ahmar, the Egyptian handball legend, raised the flag at the opening ceremony, while the flag was raised at the closing ceremony, Hedaya Malak, a bronze medalist in taekwondo.
It is likely that the Egyptian flag, in the opening and closing of the next edition, will have two new faces.
Mohamed Salah was the solution
Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool star, was the strongest candidate to raise the Egyptian flag at the Tokyo Olympics, if he participated in football competitions with the Egyptian Olympic team.
But after the Reds refused and confirmed his absence from the Olympics, the Egyptian mission will have to choose between more than one name, but there are no indications that one of the football players will carry the Egyptian flag at the opening.
Alaa Abu al-Qasim
Alaa Abu Al-Qasim, Egypt’s Olympic champion, will be the most prominent candidate to raise Egypt’s work at the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, especially since he is the only angel who won previous Olympic medals among all members of the mission.
Alaa won silver in the 2012 London Olympics in arms. Hedaya won the bronze in taekwondo in the last session in Rio, as mentioned above, but the latter raised the flag of Egypt in the last session at the closing ceremony.
Mayar Sharif and Farida Othman
The Egyptian tennis star, Mayar Sharif, or Farida Othman, the world champion in swimming, may also have the share to raise Egypt’s work in the Tokyo Olympics, especially since the duo is known in the media to the Egyptian masses, and the last period witnessed their frequent appearance, unlike Alaa Abu Al-Qasim.
