US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Friday that the remarks by the head of the social network TikTok, Xu Zi Qiu, are “deeply disturbing.” It was a reaction to Thursday’s “interrogation” of the head of Tiktok before members of the Energy and Commerce Committee. According to Reuters, McCarthy believes that lawmakers will pass a law in response to concerns about the app, which will have the support of both. Republicans and Democrats.

“He’s a company president who can’t tell you China isn’t spying on data,” McCarthy said of the TikTok boss. At the same time, more than 150 million Americans use the app, less than half of the population.
The main theme of the TikTok chief’s five-hour appearance before lawmakers Thursday was an attempt to allay fears that Beijing might gain access to personal data of American users. The network is still banned in the United States.
In response to Xu Ziqiu’s testimony on Friday, China said it has not asked any companies to hand over data collected overseas. “China attaches great importance to the protection and security of personal data,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning at a press conference.
The British Parliament will ban TikTok on all business devices. A similar step has already been announced, for example, by the European Commission, the European Parliament, Canada, Belgium, Denmark or the Czech Ministry of Interior and Foreign Affairs.
