The political advisor to the UAE President, Anwar Gargash, announced that his country will send a delegation to Iran to discuss relations between the two countries, indicating that the UAE shares regional concerns about Iranian policies.
Gargash said, in a press statement he made today, Tuesday, and reported by “Reuters”, that the UAE will soon send a delegation to Iran as part of efforts to improve relations between the two parties, noting that his country will update the allies in the Gulf region on developments in matters.
In response to a question about the date on which an Emirati delegation will hold talks in Tehran, Gargash added: “The sooner the better.”
He continued, “There is an appreciation on the part of the Iranians to rebuild bridges with the Gulf. We are dealing with that with a positive perspective.”
However, the senior Emirati official added that his country still shared concerns about Iran’s regional activities, but stressed that “confrontation is not the best way to move forward.”
Gargash indicated that dialogue and economic cooperation are part of confidence-building measures with Iran, stressing that “it will take time.”
He considered that even if negotiations on the nuclear agreement with Iran lead to positive results, it will not address all concerns about Iranian policies.
There has been constant tension for years in the political relations between Iran and the UAE, an ally of Saudi Arabia, over several issues, but the two countries have extensive commercial ties.
The Iranian government previously confirmed that the UAE is the second largest trading partner of the Islamic Republic, coinciding with reciprocal measures to normalize political relations.
Yesterday, Monday, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Amir Hossein Abdollahian, had a telephone conversation with his Emirati counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, where they discussed common consular and political issues.
