Football associations from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland have submitted a joint effort to host the 2028 European Championships today (Wednesday), Reuters news agency reported.
Last month, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland unveiled plans to host the tournament after withdrawing from the bid to host the 2030 World Cup after a feasibility study.
“The government has reaffirmed its support for the joint venture,” the coalition said in a statement. In the coming months, after learning the European Football Association (UEFA) regulations and full technical specifications, we will further enhance our plans for the offer. This includes engaging in discussions with potential host cities and stadiums to produce a better portfolio and full cost-benefit analysis.
For its part, UEFA said countries wishing to host the 2028 edition in October must confirm their bids by March 23.
The list of countries that want to organize will be announced in April, while the winning bid will be selected in September 2023.
The minimum requirements are 10 stadiums in addition to two stadiums with a capacity of at least 50,000 spectators, including one stadium with a capacity of at least 60,000 spectators.
It is noteworthy that the 2024 edition will be run by Germany.
