Ukrainian show “Caligula” wins prize at Cairo Festival for Experimental Theater

The show (Caligula), produced by the Ukrainian Drama Academy, won the grand prize of the 28th Cairo International Festival of Experimental Theater, which came to an end on Sunday evening.

The show also won Best Director and Best Actor awards, and the Best Scenography award went to Muhannad Karim from the Emirates for the show (The Last Comedy), while Hala Omran won the Best Actress award for her role in the Kuwaiti show (i Media).

The jury awarded a certificate of appreciation for the “efforts of promising acting talents” for the participants in the show (Total Calm) from Bahrain, and another certificate of appreciation for the artist Ahmed Abu Arada for his role in the show (The Last Comedy) from the Emirates.

The closing ceremony was held at the Grand Theater of the Egyptian Opera House, and included a review panel entitled (Akon) directed by Mohamed Morsi, which expresses the creator’s endeavor for continuous experimentation based on the history of arts with its different sources and origins and how to fuse the audio-visual inventory to create a new artistic state.

The ceremony included honoring the Jordanian director and actor Khaled Al-Tarifi, the French playwright Jean-Guy Leica, the Emirati director Naji Al-Hay, the Egyptian director Issam Al-Sayed and the Egyptian director Hassan Al-Gretali, in addition to the name of the late critic Fawzi Fahmy, whose name this year’s festival bears.

In his closing speech, festival president Gamal Yaqout said that the most important gains of this session are the transfer of performances and training workshops to a number of governorates outside Cairo.

He added that this year’s session was prepared in a short time and was held over a few days, but next year’s session will be held on the usual date of the festival from the first to the eleventh of September 2022, and its scientific focus will be (experimentation and technological development).
