The Israeli army announced, on Thursday, that dozens of missiles were launched from Lebanon towards Israel, in a major escalation that comes amid tensions over the Israeli police operations at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
Videos posted on social media showed missiles flying over northern Israel, and the sound of explosions in the distance.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he “receives continuous updates on the security situation, and will conduct an assessment with the heads of the security establishment.”
And the Israeli Ministry of Defense stated, in a statement, that “Defense Minister Yoav Gallant was also briefed on the recent security events on the northern borders of Israel.”
The Israel Airports Authority announced that its northern airspace was closed to civil aviation.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese News Agency reported that Israeli forces fired several artillery shells at southern Lebanon in response to rocket fire from Lebanon.
The agency said that the Israeli bombing targeted the outskirts of the city of Tyre, in the south of the country, and added that the sounds of rockets fired from Lebanon and the Israeli bombing were heard throughout the region.
The Lebanese army told CNN that it had no information to announce at this time.
CNN also contacted Hezbollah for comment, but has not yet received an official response. Hezbollah’s Al-Manar channel said that Israel had bombed Lebanese territory.
“The escalation between Lebanon and Israel is very dangerous,” the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said in a statement to CNN.
UNIFIL confirmed that “multiple missiles” were launched from southern Lebanon towards Israel, and that the Israeli army informed it that it had activated the “Iron Dome” defense system in response.
She added, “The Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Aroldo Lazzaro, is in contact with the authorities on both sides of the Blue Line, and that the current situation is very dangerous and urges UNIFIL to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation.”
It pointed out that it directed its personnel stationed at the border between the two countries to enter the shelters.
It is noteworthy that the missiles fired from Lebanon at Israel, on Thursday, are the largest attack of its kind since the 33-day conflict between the two countries in 2006.
