CNN journalist Jeff Zeleny surprised US President Joe Biden at his press conference by asking again if he still believed Russian President Vladimir Putin was a “murderer” as he once described it.
The US President answered him by saying, “I don’t think it is very important about the meeting that we are going to have, but I honestly answered the question in the interview,” referring to the interview he gave to the American network “ABC” last March.
When CNN journalist Zeleny told Biden that Putin laughed when she called him a “murderer,” Biden was silent for a moment and then smiled, “I’m laughing too.”
“I will make clear to President Putin that there are areas in which we can cooperate if he chooses to, and if he chooses not to cooperate and behave in the way he has done in the past with regard to cybersecurity and some other activities, then we will respond and we will respond in kind,” Biden said at a news conference in Brussels on Monday.
Biden added: “We must decide where our common interest and the world’s interest are, cooperate and see if we can do that. And the areas in which we do not agree, and clarify what the red lines are.”
He doesn’t care about being called a “killer.”
The American channel, NBC News, conducted an interview with Putin before the planned summit. Excerpts were published on Friday, including his question about his opinion on Biden’s description of him as a “murderer” after a series of assassinations, one of which targeted the Russian opposition leader, Boris Nemtsov. Putin laughed and said: “During my tenure I used to attack from all sides under all pretexts and reasons.”
The Russian president added that the word “murderer” is a Hollywood term and is part of American political culture.
